The Leasing KC team could be qualified as foodies; we love to check out ALL the great food Kansas City has to offer. Recently, we’ve been exploring the Troost corridor, treating ourselves to everything from amazing African cuisine to phenomenal pastries. Here are some of our favorite places that we have come across on our journey!
1. Fannie’s West African Cuisine – 4105 Troost Avenue
Fannie’s West African Cuisine offers exactly what the name implies, food that has its roots in West African countries. Our must-try dish? The Peanut Butter Soup with fufu, preferably with goat (but the chicken and beef are also delightful!)
2. The Combine – 2999 Troost Avenue
The Combine must be one of our favorite lunch stops in Kansas City. We love to have our working lunches here, dining on either the Hot Reuban sandwich or one of the gigantic pizza slices! We also love that they have a nod to the historic roots of their building, with their Wonder Favorites selections.
3. Love is Key Food and Dessert Innovation – 3000 Troost Avenue
The food at Love is Key Food and Dessert Innovation is certainly great, but it’s the friendly staff that makes this place an even bigger stand out in our books. The instant you walk in the door the staff makes you feel like family! For food to try there, we really enjoy their Southern Bell chicken and waffles meal.
4. Ruby Jean’s Kitchen & Juicery – 3000 Troost Avenue
We LOVE coming to Ruby Jean’s for a refreshing afternoon juice or smoothie (although their food also packs a punch too!) Our favorite smoothies are Fresco Island and Mint to Be!
5. Black Hole Bakery – 5531 Troost Avenue
WE LOVE THESE PASTRIES! There is a reason that there is a line out the door at Black Hole Bakery on the daily. They specialize in French pastries (their specialty croissants are to die for!) and they are the only place in the metro to offer mochi donuts. They are served on a first-come, first-served basis – so be sure to get there early if you want their full selection!
6. Niecie’s Restaurant – 6441 Troost Avenue
Niecie’s has been a staple on Troost for decades. They serve Soul Food, and their restaurant is indeed Food for Your Soul. We love stopping here for a hearty breakfast with good company!
7. Urban Café – 5500 Troost Avenue
This colorful farm-to-table restaurant is SO GOOD. We highly recommend you try the renowned Lobster Grilled Cheese for an indulgent delight! They also have a delicious strawberry limoncello mocktail that can’t be beat!
8. Equal Minded Café & Event Center – 4327 Troost Avenue
One of our favorite remote working spaces, the Equal Minded Café & Event Center is a great place to start your workday with their large selection of caffeinated beverages, delectable breakfast options, and welcoming environment! We love to start our day with their Bacon & Cheddar Breakfast melt and a Café au Lait.
9. Thelma’s Kitchen – 3101 Troost Avenue
Thelma’s Kitchen is a business with a mission. Their to-go window offers a donate-what-you-can option which provides an option for those experiencing financial hardships. Those of us who can afford it are encouraged to pay $11 (or more) to cover the cost of lunch and help offer social and mental health services to Kansas City locals in need. They also have an option to buy a $12 Pay It Forward token that you can give to someone else to provide them with a meal!
10. Soulcentricitea – 1106 E 30th Street, Suite F
Okay, we know this one doesn’t have a Troost address, but it is still right off the corridor! This tearoom is unlike any tearoom you have ever experienced! All of their fantastic signature beverages are named after black female authors. From the moment you walk in, until the moment you leave the sense of self-healing and zen encompasses your body.
There are so many awesome restaurants, cafes, tea shops, and more in the Troost corridor, it was so hard for us to narrow the list! We encourage you to go try all of these and anything else that may catch your eye in this vibrant community!
